Posted: April 7, 2011 in the Milwaukee Community Journal

Snip:  “A Black Marriage Day Seminar was held at the Brentwood Church of Christ on March 26 to celebrate the national observance that is always on the fourth Sunday in March. This year’s theme was: “Married and Proud of It!” Barbara White from the Center for Self-Sufficiency gave a presentation at the event and the Center also provided VOW to Succeed brochures and paraphernalia.”

Bolstering Black Marriage

Opinion Column by Angela Turner

Snip:  "The institution of marriage has become a rare gem in many communities - particularly African-American communities. According to the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center, in 1940 more than 95% of African-American children lived with both parents. Sadly, today only about 35% of African-American children live with both parents, compared to about 76% of white children. Moreover, research has shown that African-American children who have married parents benefit in a number of ways, including: economics, better parenting and children with fewer behavioral problems and better educational outcomes. There is hope for turning this trend around by creating awareness of and interest in the benefits of this sacred commitment, and the Center for Self-Sufficiency, based in Milwaukee, is making strides to do just that."

Let's Celebrate Black Marriage Day

Opnion Column by James E. Causey

Snip:  "“Sunday is National Black Marriage Day. It's a time for communities and neighborhoods across the country to celebrate marriage in the black community. Healthy relationships and healthy marriages equal better outcomes for children and stronger communities. If you want to point a finger at arguably the No. 1 problem facing the black community, it's not education. It's not unemployment. And it's not racism. It's too many single mothers raising children alone."
